Location: AFGHANISTAN

War: AFGHANISTAN: WAR ON TERROR (2001-)

Ambushed Nov. 19 as she and three colleagues traveled on the road from Jalalabad to Kabul, Afghanistan's capital. The journalists were riding in the second and third vehicles in a four-truck convoy when they were stopped by six gunmen, taken into the mountains and shot. Also murdered: reporter Julio Fuentes, TV cameraman Harry Burton and photographer Azizullah Haidari. Cutuli, a 39-year-old Italian newspaper reporter for Corriere Della Sera Italian Newspaper, told friends she thought it "imprudent" to make the trip but went anyway. One witness heard a gunman shout, "The Taliban are still here!" The journalists did not have an armed escort.
