Ambushed Nov. 19 as he and three colleagues traveled on the road from Jalalabad to Kabul, Afghanistan's capital. The journalists were riding in the second and third vehicles in a four-truck convoy when they were stopped by six gunmen, taken into the mountains and shot. Also murdered: reporter Maria Grazia Cutuli, TV cameraman Harry Burton and photographer Azizullah Haidari. Fuentes, 46, was a reporter for his Madrid-based newspaper. One witness heard a gunman shout, "The Taliban are still here!" The journalists did not have an armed escort.
