Shot by several gunmen at least five times on Sept. 5 outside his home in Puerto Barrios. The host of the local radio program "Direct Line," Alegria, 38, also was a correspondent for the national radio network Emisoras Unidas and had reportedly been threatened on three different occasions after broadcasting stories about local corruption. Guatemala's Ombudsman's Office for Human Rights investigated the journalist's death and concluded his murder was probably masterminded by local officials in retaliation for Alegria's stories about corruption.
