Died Sept. 5 in Tashkent from shrapnel wounds he suffered in Afghanistan in 1999. A native of France, Brunereau, 48, was a freelancer for the Brussels daily newspaper Le Soir when he was struck by shrapnel during a Taliban attack as he was flying into Taloqan, Afghanistan. He underwent several operations in Tajikistan and in France but was never able to fully recover. A former reporter for Agence France-Presse, Brunereau worked in Central Asia for awhile, but his health gradually deteriorated, colleagues said. He was based in Tashkent at the time of his death.
