Owner, publisher and columnist of the daily Folha do Estado in Cuiabá in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, he was shot at least five times by two unidentified men Sept. 30. With an engineer, he was looking at his new building that was under construction when the gunmen approached, shot him in the chest and head with a handgun, then fled on a motorcycle. In an Oct. 1 editorial, the newspaper attributed the killing to the "parallel power," a reference to organized crime groups that operate in Mato Grosso. The newspaper said the murder was the result of the extensive coverage of drug trafficking, illegal gambling and government corruption.
