A television reporter who traveled the world on assignment, he died Dec. 22 after being hit the day before by a tank during U.S. military exercises in the Kuwaiti desert. First, it was believed that he had suffered only broken ribs, but further tests showed his spleen was badly ruptured and one of his kidneys damaged. The U.S. Army said the reporter was hit after leaning "out into the path of incoming tanks to take a personal picture." But TF-1's Internet site said he was hit as he attempted to tell a cameraman to move out of harm's way. TF-1 reported that it was "very possible" that he was killed trying to protect his cameraman. He was 48.
