Managing editor of the weekly Zamboanga Scribe and a commentator on DXKP radio station in Pagadian City on the island of Mindanao, he was shot and killed May 13. Two witnesses riding with him identified the gunman as a local police officer who later was arrested, then managed to escape from custody in February 2003. Other journalists believe that their colleague, who had revealed and attacked corruption among local politicians and the police, was killed because of those journalistic efforts.
