A Palestinian freelance photographer, Abu Zahra died of a gunshot wound in Jenin, West Bank. A fellow photographer who was wounded in the incident said shots were fired from a machine gun on an Israeli tank. Israel's military said the tank gunner was responding to rifle fire from Palestinians who were throwing firebombs and rocks at the tank. Other reports said the Palestinian reaction came after the journalists were shot. Both journalists wore jackets identifying them as press. Abu Zahra started an independent newspaper, Jenin, in 1996.
