A freelance Italian photographer, he was killed by machine-gun fire believed to be from an Israeli tank in Ramallah on the West Bank on March 13. Palestinian hospital officials and witnesses said Ciriello was the first foreign journalist killed since Israeli-Palestinian fighting broke out in September 2000. A freelance photographer, he had his journalist credentials for this assignment from the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. The Israeli army expressed regret over the death but said its investigation had not determined the source of the gunfire. Another Italian journalist said that a tank emerged at one end of the street 150 to 200 yards away, that his colleague pointed his camera at the tank and came under fire without warning. He was shot six times and died of his wounds soon after. He was 42.
