Couso, a cameraman, was killed when a U.S. tank fired on Baghdad’s Palestine Hotel, where dozens of journalists were staying. He was covering the U.S. invasion of Baghdad for a Spanish television network. Initial investigations in the United States and Spain found insufficient evidence of wrongdoing by the American soldiers. But a Spanish judge reopened the case in 2011 after a leaked diplomatic cable showed that the United States had pressured Spain into dropping charges against the soldiers. Couso was 37.
