First American journalist to die covering the war in Iraq, he was killed April 3 in a Humvee accident while traveling with the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division. In addition to being editor-at-large for Atlantic Monthly, he was a columnist for The Washington Post. Previously, he worked for other newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times and The New Yorker. He was 46, married and the father of two young boys.
