The freelance journalist and photographer, on assignment for Camera Press, was arrested outside a prison in Tehran on June 23 while taking pictures of the families of demonstrators being held there. She died July 11 while in police custody. On July 16, Iran's vice president admitted that "she died of a brain hemorrhage caused by a beating," indicating that Iranian police had caused her death. Kazemi, 54, was born in Iran, but had immigrated to Canada and had dual Canadian-Iranian citizenship.
