A Palestinian cameraman working for Reuters Television, he was fatally shot Aug. 17 by U.S. soldiers, who reportedly mistook his camera for a shoulder-fired rocket launcher. He and other journalists were outside a prison in western Baghdad that earlier had come under a mortar attack in which six Iraqis were killed. In 2001, Mazen was given an International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists for his coverage of the events in the West Bank. He was lauded by the head of Reuters' global news operations as "a brave and award-winning journalist who had worked in many of the world's hot spots." He was 41 and left a wife and four children.
