The radio reporter was killed while traveling on Aug. 22 to cover a town hall meeting between the Colombian president and regional officials in Puerto Asis in Putumayo state. His vehicle was fired upon by a rebel group manning a roadblock. Benavides Arevalo, 25, was killed; another reporter traveling with him was wounded. The community radio station is operated by the local Roman Catholic diocese.
