The Radio France Internationale (RFI) correspondent was killed by a local policeman Oct. 21 while he was waiting to interview opposition activists who were soon to be released. The reporter was in his car in the capital city of Abidjan when the policeman asked why he was there. The officer then went into a building, returned and fatally shot the reporter for unknown reasons. Helene, 50, had been covering Africa for RFI for 10 years. (His given name was Christian Baldensperger.)
