A former Kurdish underground fighter in the separatist region in northern Iraq, he began in journalism as a cameraman in 1994 and later became a reporter, opening a news bureau in Mosul. He was arrested at least twice during Saddam Hussein's rule and accused of being a Kurdish intelligence agent. He was killed on July 2 when the news bureau was raked with gunfire during a battle in Mosul.
