Editor of the Bengali daily Dainik Janmabhumi, Kabir, 55, was killed June 25 when at least two bombs were thrown at him in front of his office. An outlawed leftist group, in calls to other local media, said it was behind the attack. Kabir, also known as Balu, was a veteran journalist and president of the local press club. His stories had condemned organized crime and a group that had killed his friend and fellow journalist Manik Saha. It was the same group that claimed responsibility for Kabir's killing.
