Believed kidnapped on July 7 when he failed to meet a colleague at the Minsk (Belarus) Airport, he was officially declared dead by a Minsk court in November 2003. His disappearance and death are believed linked to his coverage of the fighting in Chechnya. Although his widow and mother and several international organizations have called for investigations and the arrest of Belarus government officials believed guilty, the case has been marked by Belarus secrecy and denial of government involvement. He was 29 when he disappeared.
