Advertising copywriter Baldoni had gone to Iraq to research a book and had agreed to produce articles for the Milan magazine while he was there. He was taken prisoner by a militant group that threatened to kill him unless Italy withdrew its 3,000 troops from Iraq. When Italy refused, the writer was murdered, according to a videotape sent to the Arabic news channel Al Jazeera. Baldoni's murder later was confirmed by Italian officials. He was 56.
