The reporter was covering a dispute about the results of recent elections in the city of Juigalpa when she was shot once, at close range, outside the election office. She had just come out of the vote-counting center and was talking to several people when she was shot. She was taken to a local hospital, but was dead on arrival. Local press reports suggest that a former mayor of El Ayote may have fired the fatal shot. She was 26 and left a 3-year-old son.
