A syndicated columnist whose writings appeared in four regional newspapers and an Internet publication, Arratia died of a heart attack after being kidnapped and brutally beaten in Matamoros. His fingers were broken and his skull fractured, in addition to other injuries. On Sept. 24, police arrested a suspect who confessed to being involved in the killing. He said Arratia was murdered because of his journalistic work. Arratia was 55.
