The founder and editor of a leading opposition publication was gunned down March 2 in his apartment building. Seven shots were fired, four of which hit him. According to the Baku Press Club, the editor's family said that he had received several threats. The magazine previously had been ordered shut down twice, and Huseynov, 38, had been jailed for six months in a libel suit. The killing heightened tension between the government and the democratic opposition in the oil-rich country.
