Al-Rubai'i, a newspaper reporter and editor, disappeared in mid-April and is presumed dead. No body has been found. However, his press pass was found in the possession of several criminals arrested in June, and they told authorities that he had been beheaded because he was a "traitor." In addition to his newspaper work, al-Rubai'i became a media officer for the National Assembly a few months before his disappearance.
