Cantoneros, a radio broadcaster known for denouncing corruption and for criticizing local politicians, was ambushed on May 4 by as many as three motorcycle-riding gunmen in Dipolog City on Mindanao. He was holding his own pistol when he was found, indicating that he may have fired back at his attackers. Although a special police task force was formed to investigate the murder, it is believed that if there are any witnesses they are too fearful to testify. Cantoneros was 32.
