Amapindi died while attending the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Atlanta, apparently from malaria, a parasitic infection contracted in Namibia. She had gone to Namibia in July 2004 to intern as a radio anchor for Namibian Broadcasting Corp. While there she also hoped to get to know her father in his homeland. She returned to the United States a year later. She was 23.
