Al-Sagheer was known as a strong supporter of press freedom and referred to by the Yemen Times as the "father of the Yemeni press" because of his assisting a number of small publications. He and his wife were killed by a gunman in their house in downtown Sana'a. Motive for the murders is uncertain.
