A Swedish freelance print and television journalist and photographer, Adler was fatally shot while filming a demonstration in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. At least two other journalists covering the event saw a lone gunman approach the award-winning reporter, shoot him in the chest and then disappear into the crowd. Adler died instantly. The rally was in support of a peace agreement between warring local factions. Adler is survived by his widow and two daughters. The motive for the killing is unknown.
