After al-Dhahir fought off a kidnapping attempt as he waited outside his home for a ride to work, his assailants fatally shot him in the back and the head. He was managing editor of a privately owned newspaper that frequently was critical of the government. Various death threats reportedly had been received at the newspaper, where the slain journalist had worked for about four years.
