Best known as the head of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, al-Tamimi died from wounds suffered in what was described as a targeted shooting in Baghdad. His son, who was in the car when the shooting occurred, was wounded. Al-Tamimi was an active freelance journalist at the age of 74 and had been the head of the union since 2003. He had received death threats before, including one in 2005 that forced him into hiding for a month.
