A radio journalist, al-Batat was gunned down in the town of Qurna. His station, in the southern city of Basra, is run by the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council, whose leader has sided with the Iraqi government in a crackdown against a militia group loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Al-Batat was 38.
