Chaiyanurat, a reporter for the Thai-language daily newspaper Matichon, was shot fatally in his home as he cooked dinner for his family. The Thai Journalists Association said the killing was "aimed at silencing the media and discouraging them from reporting facts." His wife said that he had been "extra careful recently due to a conflict with some local politicians over his reports." He was 48.
