A reporter and program host for an Islamic television channel in the troubled North Caucasus region, Alishayev was shot by two men as he sat in his car. He died the next day in Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian republic of Dagestan. He also produced documentaries about a radical form of Islam. Relatives and colleagues believe he was targeted for his television work. Alishayev was the second journalist killed in the region in four days. His funeral was attended by more than 1,000 mourners.
