Garcia, a cameraman for the daily television news program "Detras de la Noticia" ("Behind the News") was shot several times from a passing vehicle while leaving his car at a car wash in the city of Santiago, about 100 miles north of the capital, Santo Domingo. He was talking with a taxi driver at the time; the driver also was killed. Colleagues at the TV station said that Garcia had been threatened several times for his work on stories about crime and drug trafficking, and they believe that the killing was retaliation for Garcia's work.
