Bounsampop, the editor of a local newspaper, was in a restaurant with his wife when two men on a motorcycle shot him twice in the head, killing him. Other Thai journalists have said they believe he was killed because of stories he had written and published about local corruption, and that he had told local police he was "afraid that he might be killed." Other reports have noted that some of his stories on local politics had "earned him enemies." Bounsampop was 52.
