Fischer and Christian Struwe, freelance journalists working for Deutsche Welle, were researching a documentary in Afghanistan when they were killed in their tent. Both had reported from Afghanistan before and had helped local broadcasters. The Deutsche Welle director general said that it was "tragic" that they were killed in the country "they had dedicated so much of their personal efforts to supporting." Fischer was 30, and Struwe was 38. The killers have yet to be apprehended.
