Baburova, a journalism student at Moscow State University and a reporter for Novaya Gazeta, was covering a press conference with Stanislav Markelov, a human rights lawyer. As the two left the conference, an unknown gunman shot and killed Markelov. Baburova tried to stop the gunman, who then shot her. She died hours later in a hospital. She was 25 and had worked part-time at Novaya Gazeta for less than a year.
