Ahmed, the director of the independent radio station HornAfrik and host of a popular talk show, was killed by gunmen who shot him in the back and in the head. He was on his way to a meeting with other journalists called by an Islamist militia group. Gunmen from the group are believed to be the killers. The National Union of Somali Journalists called him "a leading journalist who was killed by enemies of press freedom." Ahmed is survived by his wife and seven children. Somalia has been involved in civil conflict for a number of years.
