Awan, a reporter, was killed by a suicide bomber in Dera Ismail Khan, in the North West Frontier Province. He and another journalist had raced to the scene of a small explosion when the suicide bomber set off a larger explosion in front of the Government Polytechnic College that killed seven people, including the two journalists. A fellow journalist said, "We have no choice but to go to the scene of incidents even though we are putting our lives at risk."
