AFGHANISTAN: WAR ON TERROR (2001-)
Ahmad, a freelance cameraman who was working as a field producer for CTV, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Kandahar. Working mostly for Canadian news outlets, he had been held by U.S. forces for 11 months starting in 2007 as an "enemy combatant," with no explanation given for his arrest or his sudden release. CTV said that he was "a terrific young journalist" whose death was "a loss for Afghan journalism [as well as] international and Canadian journalism." Ahmad, who also used the surname Yazamy and was known by the nickname Jojo, was 23.
