Majumdar, the editor of the Assamese-language daily newspaper Aji, was shot seven times at close range by gunmen waiting outside his home in Guwahati when he returned from work. Some reports link the killing to the national elections in India, saying it may be related to the Assamese separatist movement. Majumdar had advocated for peace talks between the separatists and the government. He is survived by a wife and a young daughter.
