Akhmedilov, a journalist for the daily newspaper Hakikat (The Truth) in the Russian republic of Dagestan, was found shot to death in his car in Makhachkala, the capital. Akhmedilov was known for his strong commentaries and for his investigative reporting on the killings of Dagestani officials. He also wrote about the suppression of religious and political dissent in the region. In 2008, Akhmedilov wrote, "If we remain silent, they will shoot us all one by one." He was 32.
