AFGHANISTAN: WAR ON TERROR (2001-)
Two New York Times journalists, Munadi and Stephen Farrell, were kidnapped by the Taliban while covering the aftermath of a NATO raid in Afghanistan. A British military rescue mission freed Farrell, but Munadi was killed. The source of gunfire that killed him has not been determined. Asked about his captors, Farrell said, "I did not think they were going to kill me. I did think they were going to kill him [Munadi]." Munadi was a respected Afghan journalist.
