AFGHANISTAN: WAR ON TERROR (2001-)
Hamer, a veteran war correspondent on his fifth trip to Afghanistan, was embedded with a U.S. Marine unit when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb near Nawa in Helmand province. Hamer was killed, along with a Marine and an Afghan soldier. Sunday Mirror editor Tina Weaver said, “Rupert believed that the only place to report a war was from the front line, and as our defense correspondent he wanted to be embedded with U.S. Marines at the start of their vital surge into southern Afghanistan.” Hamer, 39, had been with London’s Sunday Mirror for 12 years. He was married with three children.
