Abkey, a veteran journalist, was abducted, tortured and fatally shot while returning home. Radio Mogadishu, the state-owned station where he worked, said it received a phone call from an insurgent group claiming responsibility for the killing. Colleagues suggested he was targeted because the radio station was critical of radical Islamists. Abkey had worked for other radio stations as well as for television. He left a wife and four children.
