Birhamani, a newspaper reporter, was kidnapped on May 9, and his tortured and beaten body was found the next morning. Some believed he was targeted because of his recent reports on the marriage of a 12-year-old girl to a man 10 years older, as well as his coverage of other tribal matters. Birhamani had worked for several years for various Sindhi-language dailies. He was 40 and left a wife and three children.
