Awale, a veteran radio journalist and director of the community radio station, was on the roof adjusting the station’s transmitter when he was killed by a stray bullet from nearby fighting between insurgents and African Union troops. Somalia has been one of the most dangerous countries for journalists since the central government was overthrown in 1991.
