Byabenin, the founder and publisher of the opposition news website Charter 97, was found hanged in a stairway of his summer house outside the capital city, Minsk. Police initially said he committed suicide but later agreed that he could have been murdered. The website often reports on human rights issues, opposition activities and corruption in government. Byabenin was 36.
