Fakhrawi, a founder and board member of Al-Wasat, a leading independent newspaper in Bahrain, died in police custody. Police said he died of kidney failure, but photos of his body showed multiple cuts and bruises. He went to the police on April 5 to complain that authorities planned to bulldoze his house. He was taken into custody during major unrest in Bahrain. Earlier that month, Al-Wasat was accused of “deliberate news fabrication and falsification.” Fakhrawi was 49.
