Khpalwak, a BBC stringer and reporter for the Pajhwok Afghan News agency, was one of four people killed during an insurgent gun and bomb attack in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan. An investigation revealed that he was shot by a U.S. soldier who mistakenly thought the reporter was a suicide bomber. The BBC said Khpalwak’s death “highlights the great dangers facing journalists who put their lives on the line to provide vital news from around the world.” Khpalwak was 25.
