Al-Mahdi, a popular radio journalist who often criticized the government and politicians, was shot with silencer-equipped pistols in his apartment. He was frequently threatened, and the morning of his death he wrote on his Facebook page, “I have lived the last three days in a state of terror.” Human Rights Watch said, “The killing of Hadi al-Mahdi sadly highlights that journalism in Iraq remains a deadly profession.” His murder was front-page news in The Washington Post. Al-Mahdi was 45.
